I Say Coupon, You Say Q-pon

by in Bloggers, Communicaton

Pronunciations vary by region, so it’s always fun to hear someone else says the words you say in a different manner. Like coupon vs. Q-pon, though that seems to vary even within regions. Mr. Wombat was recenlty telling the kiddies about Boston and how their accent sounds different from ours. His example included bathroom humor (obviously): “Don’t faaht in the caaah.” This is currently their favorite phrase. Natch.

So when I saw this meme on Wait in the Van, I wanted to join in the fun. I love hearing how other people talk, so grab your video cam and link back to me so I can see it!

Here’s whatcha gotta say in your video so we can snicker in your general direction hear how you pronounce it:

Questions:

  • Your name and/or username
  • Where you’re from
  • The following words: Aunt, Roof, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting Image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught, Orange, Coffee, Direction, Naturally, Aluminum, Herbs.
  • What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house? [on the night before Halloween?]
  • What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
  • What do you call gym shoes?
  • What do you say to address a group of people?
  • What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
  • What do you call your grandparents?
  • What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
  • What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
  • What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

Here’s mine (my apologies for the epic length):

And here’s Brenda hawking girl products:

Dude, you totally sound like Brenda in that commercial!

And I would also call a big ol’ daddy long legs ‘sir’ as well.

Great vid, I will have to attempt one myself. I can totally pick up your western NY inflections – I grew up just outside of Buffalo on the Canadian side, so when I moved out west people had no idea where I was from.

What’s wrong with driving in a ‘Kaaar’, or eating ‘It-AL-ee-yan’ food?
I have nasal tenancies, I can’t help it.

  7. From Ms. Wasteland:

I never, never, never say Q-pon. My senior English teacher in high school had a list of frequently mispronounced words that we had to practice and recite in front of the whole class. ‘Coupon’ was on the list.

PS I call any bug ‘DEAD’.
